The first step to confront "Artificial Intelligence"

Before discussing the dehumanization it causes, its oppresive mechanisms, its deification, its environmental impact, its role on the new meta-war age, its erosion of the digital ecosystem, the cognitive decline of its users or its horrible ethical implications, we have to reconsider a common first step.

It's important to know the whys and hows of the so called "Artificial Intelligene" to oppose it properly and not fall in its trap. Just like many other systems that stem from the thirst for manipulation of politics, as in this case is capitalism, it's vital no avoid falling into mere direct confrontation and unresrtained opposition. Not only will you stumble into many dead ends, but it'll be too late when you realize that you've been dedicating efforts to pour oil upon the flames.

Let's start with its ontology. So called "Artificial Intelligence", as we picture it now on 2026, you and me, is not artificial intelligence; or better said, it's not the totality of artificial intelligence. It's so flashy for the average person to believe that the field of artificial intelligence can be summarized as a lineal development of models, turning its screws with each iteration, that finally reached its current dystopian state. Reality, however, is that artificial intelligence is an enormous field, filled with branches with many different models specialized on solving different problem categories, or solving them in different ways. In essence, the classic goal of computer science.

That said, colloquial "Artificial Intelligence" refers to a concrete instance found on the branch of neural networks: generative artificial intelligence. I'm sure these words are familiar tou you... more or less, but it's in these abstractions where big tech get their hands on capitalizing on pre-set utopian ideas on the popular imaginary invoked by science-fiction.

I'll take this off my chest as soon as possible. Let's be clear, you are not an appasionate dreamer if you really believe that neural networks can gain conscience, just a bit ignorant (it's okay, we've all been there). These models take this name because they are made from many interconnected pondered sums, giving the appearance of a network, similar to that formed by neurons in the nervous tissue. The paralelism ends there, a mere aesthetic similitude when observed from afar. These models are usually trained on reward systems so, according to the same input data, the model tends to avoid some results and prioritize others. There's no more to it. Of course, this, taken to a much bigger scale (LLMs or Large Language Models: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), gives much more eye-catching results but that, I fear, don't really get close to meager portion of what happens on any simple nervous system. If we can't even take that for granted, let's not talk about conscience or identity, plus the many factors beyond the nervous systems that are involved in its emergence and development.

I'll highlight that every artificial intelligence model is specialized on some kind of problem. Thus, algorithms like, for example, A*, limited BFS, decision trees or tempered heuristics will excede on solving very different cases. Prediction models, these LLMs, which are just many neural networks stacked together, are no exception to this rule. The first step to confronting the generalized imposition of these models is not only to understand that they are useless in the majority of situations, but that calling them "Artificial Intelligence" is a marketing efforst orchestrated by big tech to grant this technology the decades worth of reputation that the homonymous field holds, colonizing the space that previously had artificial intelligence on the popular imaginary.

It's the same as organizing a marketing campaign on a global scale thar calls fast food as "The Food" in order to achieve that all people, when they talk about food, are just thinking about horrible hamburgers and greasy fries. Even worse, that many start to asume that there's no food beyond this and that, clearly, "it's here to stay because they say so many times on the TV and when I taste it, it's really not THAT bad". Here's where one can begin to understand the absurdity of this problem and why opposing to all food directly isn't really a good idea.

The first step to confronting "AI" is to understand that it isn't "AI", just a mere subcategory with an artificially inflated pressence just as NFTs or the Metaverse were; slogans that assure the coming of an age of changes for humanity, cemented on a technology that few people understand, making sure those either just blindly accept it or flutter like scared birds. Not all artificial intelligence is used in a wrong manner; there are many cases since decades ago, beyond neural networks or even including them, in which it has been applied correctly (tools that save hours of tedious and repetitive 3D retopology, early detection of malign tumours in medicine, compression techniques...). I'm afraid it's not the same with many LLMs and, if you don't think that, I encourage you to pay attention to future posts.

The first change we should all make is to call a spade a spade, "Artificial Intelligence" as prediction models (or at worst, "neural networks" or "generative AI", though I fear these terms, although correct, have facilitated its magnifying), in order to progressively demystify this term and deduct its power from daily dialogue. Plus, this distinction helps to focalize the real problem and set aside the marketing smoke that surrounds it. Nevertheless, just taing into account this reality, without even changing how we talk to each other, is a gigantic step on understanding how to generate resistance in an effective way.

Return to the development of the page

After some months of inactivity, I'm back on the page! Some systems were a pain in the ass so I discarded them. From here, I simplified and improvec the automatic structuration of elements in the page and everything seems to be in order once again.

Inevitably and luckily, this chapter of my life is reaching its end. No longer will I work my ass off, no matter how much I may enjoy the process.

I've also had enough time on my own to reflext on my intentions with this page, to help myself focus on the original idea and keep improving its shape. A dicussion with a good friend served as a reminder about this place not existing in isolation. It should be part of some social structure without losing its individual identity. It sure serves as an affirmation about hosting it on neocities (for the time being) and that I will present on the home page some other interesting or friend-related pages, if they ever try to be part of the indie web movement. One must never forget the human component.

Oasis

I write these words during the creation of this page, my little oasis in the digital realm. After a few forsaken tries across my life, I feel like I'm on the way of creating something truly mine. Something as deep as a home, in the good and the bad sense of it.

I dream of an anonimity that doesn't exist, yet I dream, and I believe that's what's most important, as long as one doesn't lose oneself in it. An anonimity that can perfectly coexist with the individual and the collective. I believe in human beings, and in humanity too. An idealism that, if in another lost time was actually applied, it remains lost. How fast culture (not time) manages to erase it, to the point where it vanishes from all recollection.

This page sives as a paradox for my anonimity. Self-expression, inevitable sister of human self-recognition, yuxtaposed to the need of hiding from all that is happening. At risk of sounding clumsily intense, I can't help but look back (at least, at what we know) and conclude that if the previous age was described as modern and the current one as contemporary, we should already be talking about naming the next one the "information age". It's ironic, then, how the actual term that crosses my mind to describe it is the lie. A resource always used by those in power, but that I would go so far as to say that never so explicitly and, why not, freely. We all know about the lie, it can't hide from the omnipresent globalization, immediacy and decentralization of current networks. The liers know that we know. Information no longer moves the world forward, but lies.

Going back to the original intent of this oasis, further beyond a clear activist motive, they would compare to autothelic whispers thrown into the void. This page doesn't represent communication: many of these words are not meant to be reached by any specific receptor, nor they carry any specific intention with them. They just are. Others, inevitably, will. If these words have stumbled upon you, or you upon them, and curiosity pushes you to explore this oasis, I hope whatever you may find here fulfills you, even a little.

Something has to change

What a life this one, in which I don't have time to even reflect upon it. Everything is work and chores. So easy it is to forget that I am doing them for myself, my well-being, my own choice. There is no doubt that's what has been keeping me moving forward without giving in. It wouldn't have been possible any other way.

I'm surrounded by people that have lived all their lives like this, holding on to the promise of rest, the promise that it will eventually be worth it. I don't doubt of the rewards, hell, I'm already enjoying them right now and I feel very happy about it, but there's a clear need for it to stop and me to slow down before it's too late. For my physical, psychological and creative health, this lifestyle is unsustainable. I'm already taking actions to solve this, though the worst offender on this stress will have to wait a few months still for it to reach its end.

We are currently living a state of transition in which we have to adapt and learn to survive. The rules have changed in a world that seemed to remain static forever. Maybe it was ingeniuity or an evil plan to make all people believe there was no other way, but, in truth, looking back at the history of humanity, it reveals that change has been waiting for long enough. The rising fear of war feeds into this theory. A third World War? I can't help but to think that everything that appears on the news will eventually be studied as the introductory chapter of something really, really big (and it doesn't seem to be a good thing).

I feel like I am managing to guide my life in a better path, as I did long ago, no matter how impossible it seemed. I want to think of me again, of living life instead of letting it consume me, of finding that comfortable balance and not caring at all about other people's thoughts. It's not a mere craving. It's necessary.
